Living Mindfully: 5 simple tips to relieve stress and feel calm

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, so feeling exhausted or overwhelmed is understandable. We’ve put together some simple tips to help you re-centre by tuning out of the news cycle and tuning into the moment.

With so much going on in the world around us at the moment, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the headlines and change. But for the sake of taking care of our mental health and wellbeing, it’s never been more essential to take some time out.

As we adjust to big changes in our day-to-day lives, it’s natural to be feeling anxious or uncertain, but the good news is, there are many things we can do each day to feel better.

Built around the idea of focusing our attention on the present moment, the practice of mindfulness is a soothing balm for the soul that, with practise, can help you to feel grounded and calm.

Whether you want to learn to meditate or just take some time for yourself, there are ways to do so with a sense of mindfulness. Here, we offer a few tips for simple ways to tune out, ground yourself and feel less frazzled.

With an endless supply of meditation apps and online resources to draw from, it’s never been easier to learn the art of mindfulness at home. If you’re starting from scratch, try downloading apps such as Insight Timer, Calm or Headspace and be led by the spoken-word guidance of meditation and mindfulness experts from around the world. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can try teaching the rest of the family!

From yoga and pilates to Zumba, salsa and HIIT, you’ll find an endless supply of dance and fitness clips online – and most are offered for free.

Not really the creative type? Relax. No matter your skill level, the process of creating something – from an artwork or jigsaw to a chocolate cake or a knitted scarf – is a great way to tune out of the craziness and tune into the quite calm of the present moment. Forget about the outcome; just go with your heart and see what happens. Creativity is contagious, so get the whole family involved in a joint project and you’ll have another way to keep the kids entertained. Cooking and baking count for creativity too, and can score you some serious brownie points!

Mindfulness Colouring Book – ROBINSON’S BOOKSHOP

We know the importance of doing our bit by following the #stayhome rule, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a bit of escapism while you’re at it. Try plugging in your headphones, blocking out the noise and exploring some new music while cleaning, exercising, gardening or cooking. Got a podcast recommendation you’ve been meaning to check out? Now’s the time to tune in. And with the shorter days and more time spent at home on the sofa, there’s never been a better time (for adults and kids) to get lost in the pages of a great book.

Taking pleasure in the small things is important, and the process can be just as soul soothing. Make like the Danish and create moments of hygge (cosiness) for you and your family. Get the kids in their PJs and play a family game of UNO or Monopoly, then soak the stress away in a steamy bath before snuggling up on the sofa with a cosy blanket and a mug of hot chocolate. Finding simple comfort in these uncomfortable times is a wonderful balm. Keep calm, keep comfortable, and carry on.
